Oil vs Water Density, Mass: Would You Jump Into An Oil Spill To Save Your Friend?

Media_httpdemophysics_rlwzn

You are about 70% water. Your spine with all of it's dense minerals is the heaviest part of your body per cubic inch. If it wasn't for the fat stores in your body, like your brain and liver, you'd sink on a summer day in a kiddie pool.

Oil is lighter than water. It floats to the top.

The esters, gasolines, and other components in an oil spill float even higher. They evaporate and float up to our ozone layer.

If you jumped in to save your friend, until all the super lite components of a fresh oil spill evaporated, you'd sink to the bottom of the oil layer until you hit water.

If you don't believe me, throw the BP Executive team into a spill. See for yourself.

Hundreds of Penguin Mysteriously Wash Up On Beaches of Brazil

Media_httpwwwtreehugg_qcike

This time of year, Magellan penguins migrate north from Argentina, Chile and the Falklands.

"Typically, 100-150 of them end up on these beaches - alive," says  Thiago do Nascimento of the Peruibe Aquarium.

But this year, 500+ were found dead on the same beaches. An autopsy revealed empty stomachs. So scientists are initially theorizing that the penguins may have starved to death. There is no toxicology report yet. However, they say that climate change or overfishing may have depleted the penguin's food supply. More soon.

California Strips Hybrids of HOV Carpool Lane Privileges

Governor Schwarzenegger just signed a bill making most hybrids lose their HOV lane / Carpool lane privileges. This may sound like a bad thing but in reality, most of the vehicles that qualify, like the Toyota prius, didn't really save the environment as much as you'd think.

To back this up, California is allowing white HOV lane permit stickers on super clean cars like the Tesla:

Blogger Andrew Price says he's behind the decision because it puts more pressure on manufacturers to be super conscious. Only downside for Andrew is that his own Prius dropped thousands of dollars in value.

Like Noah, Scientists Rush to Fill Millennium Seed Bank - non GMO

Media_httpwwwarsusdag_acfij

Well folks, it's happening again. Due to farmers going bankrupt, the economy nose diving, politicians blocking free trade, and corporations destroying the natural ecosystem, seeds are becoming extinct.

But that's just half the story. Mega agriculture conglomerates are genetically engineering GMO soy, corn, rice, wheat, barley, oats, and anything else we eat. They say, "we are developing crops that are genetically engineered to resist the new strains of deadly fungus and climate change."

So, a group of scientists, probably hippies, started the Millennium Seed Bank. They are rapidly rushing to collect seeds from all over the world - just like the Pharaohs did in their pyramids with beans that still grow when you just add water.

Multi Switch Power Strip Surge Protector Can Save You $300 a Year and The Earth

Energy-vampire-cost-per-year-annual
By now, we all know how that appliances still consume electricity, power, when they are turned off. Look at your cell phone charger. The green light is still on chewing up electricity while your phone is in your pocket.

Of these energy vampires, turns out that a plasma TV is the worst culprit according to a GOOD Magazine post.

But that post doesn't cover all the appliances, and electronic hardware you have plugged into the walls of you home and office. You put them together and you've got over $800 per household and small business you're wasting annually.

Between home and office, You would save about $800 a year

So your solution is simple. Just use a multiple switch surge protector or power strip and turn unused hardware off. It beats the wear and tear of unplugging things several times a day.

Just bear in mind that some computer equipment like inkjets are better off left ON. If you turn them off, the ink hardens and drys faster. You'll run to the office supply store to get a $30 refill twice as often.

For you insightful types, you're probably thinking, "even if I got a individualized on-off button power strip, I'd never use it." Well, there's a simple way to make sure you do. You know for a fact that you'll use it when you want to turn an appliance or plasma tv on. So you've got half the problem solved. Just put a note on your door to turn them back off as you leave. You'll save almost a grand a year and even get more walking in!

Photovoltaic vs Solar Thermal: Which is right for me?

Media_httpwwwconsumer_alsbo

If you've been debating whether or not to install a solar energy system for your home or business, you probably already ran into another fork in the road. Even if you decide to go solar power, it turns out that you have two more choices: photovoltaic vs solar thermal.

As the name implies, photovoltaic systems convert sunlight into electricity. Solar thermal simply heats your water with solar power so you conserve gas. http://Solarpoweredsolutionsllc.com explains that the simple way to decide which is right for you is based on which bill is higher: electricity or gas. So simple, it's ingenious, no?

SPS continues to explain that whether you decide to go the photovoltaic route or solar thermal, since you have so many choices in hardware, the three main factors to consider are power, efficiency, lifespan, cost, and state/federal incentives. Depending on which state your home or business is located, the state and federal incentives alone could pay for your install over time. For example, in Oregon, the state could pay you back for your home installation in as little as 6 years. But that's not counting the savings in your electricity bills along the way.

New Green Product: PMate so Women Can Pee Standing Up and Conserve Water from Toilet Flushing

No. This is not a joke. It's actually a pretty smart idea.

We all know that a toilet flushes about 8 liters while a urinal only flushes about 3 liters. So if women stopped using toilets and just stood up and used urinals instead, the entire planet would save over 80% of the current flushing water. Besides, the women's lines would go a lot faster. As far as sanitary issues go, women's public restrooms are known to have twice the fecal matter and E.coli than men's. So since urine is bacteria fee in healthy women, PMate is just plain logical

The biggest bonus is that women can bring their flush water usage down to zero - just like us guys. They can pee on the side wall of their favorite night-club. For the real PMATE website: http://www.pmateusa.com/howtouse.html

Pacific Garbage Patch Island Found Near Hawaii is Bigger Than Texas

Media_httpparsonsprfi_lbjpe

Wow. Seems we really are an out-of-sight-out-of-mind species. Since this island of floating debris is so far out of the way of everything, although it's been there for decades, I'm sure it'll continue to be refound every time we hear about it for the first time.

Due to pacific ocean currents, all the plastic trash that makes it through our storm drains from our side walks piles up in a place about a 3 hour boat ride from Hawaii and San Francisco. As the infographic below shows, what you see on the surface is literally just the tip of the iceberg. The mass of garbage roots down to the floor of the ocean miles beneath.

The real nightmare is that this floating garbage patch in the pacific is growing daily and is already the size of Texas. I'm going to chip in and do my part to stop it's growth. The next time I see anyone littering on the roads, I'm going to call it in like a hit-and-run. If you want to help: Contact: http://www.greatgarbagepatch.org/contact/

BP Gulf Oil Spill Means Our Kids in Canada and Australia Will Drink Gasoline Laced Rain Water

Media_httpwwwenergyin_dctnu

I just read a CNN news brief about the devastation in the Gulf of Mexico from BP's oil spill. Everyone seems enraged and concerned about the spill migrating around florida and up the eastern seaboard. I just don't get it.

It's already done. As soon as that oil hits the atmosphere, the invisible, odorless components started to evaporate into the air. The oil does not simply stay integrated as whole oil. It disintegrates.

So the trouble is that people are only focused on damage control to the visible components of oil.

via HowStuffWorks

People are only concerned about the visible part of the BP Gulf oil spill

The invisible components including gasoline and kerosine travel throughout the entire planet. And unlike the gasoline at your Arco station, this gasoline is odorless. The gas at the pump has artificial odor added in.

Industrial pollutants travel so far that scientists just yesterday announced that giant sperm whales as far as Antarctica and the Arctic were contaminated with "Jaw-Dropping" levels of toxic heavy metals that are already in our human food supply: Giant Sperm Whales Die From Toxic Industrial Pollutants in Human Food Supply as far as Antarctica

If this is hard to imagine because of the out-of-sight, out-of-mind effect, think: sharks can smell you blood miles away (but it's not your blood, it components of your blood that instantly disintegrate in water).

Media_httpeasycapture_iwaro

(don't worry, the above photo is a fake. But the odorless, tasteless acid rain that will go into your vegis is very real.)
